Pigs on the Bund

A talk presenting an american's collection of Chinese Pig Sculptures. Personally I hope I can make this - I think chinese clay and wooden pigs look awesome!

Dear Asia Society Friends:

All of you know that former Asia Society President Ambassador Nicholas Platt has been involved in US-China relations from the beginning, at least since Richard Nixon made his historic visit in 1972. What you did not know is that he arguably the United States' foremost collector of Chinese pig sculpture.
Ambassador Platt's personal passion for the animals tracks China's traditional reverence for pigs, inspiring him over the past two decades to seek at least one illustrative figure from each of the major dynasties. The result is a collection described as "unique" and "remarkable" by New York curators and dealers alike, with objects dating from the Neolithic period to the present.
In Shanghai on April 25, 2006, Ambassador Platt will present pig figures from his collection against the backdrop of Chinese history in an illustrated lecture, which made a well-received debut last month before an exclusive audience in New York City.

By way of background, Ambassador Nicholas Platt has spent most of his life working on relations between the US and Asia. He spent thirty-four years as a career diplomat, culminating in service as US Ambassador to the Philippines (1987-991) and Pakistan (1991-1992).
In 1972 Ambassador Platt accompanied President Nixon on the historic trip to Beijing that signaled the resumption of relations between the United States and China.
