The Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association (SORSA) is an NGO that came into beinin 1913 on the initiative of some returned students from overseas with expertise in a wide range of disciplines and professions. Since the resumption of its activities on September 3, 1984, the membership of SORSA has increased to more than 5,600, including 250 overseas members. Among its present members, 57 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 22, the Chinese Academy of Engineering. To streamline its organization for effective functioning and cohesion, over 40 chapters have been set up.
SORSA aims at promoting unity among scholars living in and outside of China, fostering friendship among them, carrying out academic and information exchange and promoting cooperation, serving in a word as a kind of nexus and bridge for the rejuvenation of China and for boosting prosperity in Shanghai, with all its members fully dedicated to the building of socialist material, spiritual and political civilization in the country. SORSA's day-to-day activities include sponsoring lectures, forums, symposiums and friend gatherings; editing and publishing in-house newsletters and periodicals and also collections of papers; organizing special-focus visits and tours so that members can pool and give play to their expertise across disciplines and professional fields in making suggestions and giving advice; and also helping the city to attract the service of high-caliber professionals, make use of new technologies and bring in investment funds in the interest of its social, economic and cultural development.
