Chinese Language Leaner Developers out there!

I should probably drop this message onto some forums here and there.  There's indeed a wealth of info and resources to be used on the internet.

 

I'm now using Pleco thanks to Micah's reputation (www.pleco.com), which nicely acts as a english-mandarin dictionary on my Pocket PC.  I'm also using Adsotranslate (www.adsotranslate.com) to help me read chinese documents at work, supported by the Oxford Eng-chi CE-DICT e-dictionary that came with my paper dictionary.

 

One thing I've noticed as I (Slowly) read through documents, is that there is 'specialised' language in use.  The same words keep popping up.  In my immediate context, it's words like Strategy, Plan, Design, Requirements, Scope, Business Process etc. 

 

It gave me an idea for a neat little computer program that some budding enthusiast could come up with.  (Actually I'd be willing to pay for it if someone could write it for me).  I fancy a program which could crawl through a batch of documents, and then do a frequency count of each of the words.  It could then identify all of the most common words in use - giving me a handy customised list of the words I need to learn first in order to be able to read chinese at work.  (preferably it could pick out commonly used 'specialised' vocabulary, as opposed to commonly used 'common' vocabulary - by comparing actual frequency against expected frequency - some of the electronic dictionaries such as CE-DICT have built in frequency counts).

 

Imagine - I arrive at a new Client.  One in Healthcare, or in Automotive, or in Finance.  They throw me a bunch of documents to read.  Over the next two weeks, I have a steep learning curve to get to know their company and industry specific terminology.  Such a language analysis tool could really help me out.

 

Hmmm.  Anyone out there good with manipulating text?  Maybe I could commission it at Fudan as a student's computer science project.
